Virtual School
Author: Anne Gilleran
One of EUN’s key networks, the Virtual School (VS) is a virtual meeting place for teachers to exchange material and discuss experiences. The VS project was launched in 1998, to meet the needs of teachers for relevant content for their work.
The metaphor of a school was used to make it clear that this part of the EUN website was aimed at teachers, and the subdivision is into departments related to subject and in some cases thematic areas. It is now a major learning resource, featuring online events, activities, selected sites and online course modules.
There are 20 subject-related departments with an editorial staff of more than 100 teachers, heads, teacher-trainers and researchers from 17 countries. These editors, together with visitors to the website, form an active and lively learning community.
Teachers are encouraged to submit anything from ideas for activities or events to fully-fledged online lessons. The VS editors and web team make sure the material offered is relevant, safe and useful. The motto for the VS has from the beginning been “for European teachers by European teachers” and the 100+ teachers involved are active as editors in departments and have shaped the character of their departments. The VS is one of the most popular areas of the EUN portal.
