Sun Microsystems

Sun Microsystems, Inc. has its roots in education, deriving its name from the "Stanford University Network". Regarding the students of today as the decision makers of tomorrow, since its inception in 1982 Sun has been investing in the education field, continually contributing to the education community's research and development projects.

Sun has been actively involved in higher education for over 20 years, and continues to have a significant presence in the global education and research community.  For example, in 2004 Sun UK sold to all of the UK's top Universities, as defined by The Times' Higher Education Supplement.

Across 24 countries there are 9 million primary and secondary students, and 9 million higher education students in more than 165,000 school districts, higher education institutions and Ministries of Education, all taking advantage of Sun's StarOffice office productivity suite provided free of charge to education institutions.

Since the beginning, Sun has upheld a single vision – "The Network Is The Computer[tm]" - which has propelled the organisation to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work.
