Dear colleagues,
After the Catalan version, we are very proud to welcome a new regional translation of this newsletter. The Basque authorities wish to provide more international opportunities to Basque schools in their own language. We particularly thank Eukeni Urgoiti for doing this translation.
Now some simple thoughts that come to me as I travel and meet many people in many countries: The last eTwinning Professional Development workshop that took place in Italy revealed an amazing diversity in the roles of school leaders across the EU. The support of a school leader is crucial to the development of the International dimension in education.
But what really comes out loud and clear, whether I meet teachers, school leaders or librarians, is that what really matters is guiding our pupils towards a future where they will be able to learn during their entire life, adapt to changes, communicate, work in teams and survive in a world full of social, technological and economic challenges.
This really is what matters for all the people who work in schools. This is what counts and this is the reason why we get up every morning: we are working at the source of society: children J
Kindly yours :)
Brigitte

Spring Day Blog
Europe is our living space but many young people feel that it is far away from their daily life. In this Blog, we give the floor to young Europeans to express their concerns, feelings, and hopes about the future of the EU and ask concrete questions on European issues. They may also make suggestions on how they feel Europe can get closer to its citizens. We will invite experts from all EU institutions to make comments and answer their questions. Contributions can be made in all EU languages.
For technical reasons, you must send your questions and suggestions to your national pedagogical advisor who will insert the texts in the Blog. Comments are open to all.

My Proposal for Europe:
Pupils, under the guidance of their teachers, choose a theme and make a proposal for a better Europe. The proposal should be made in one of the three main languages of the EU (English, French or German). Each proposal is presented with an online voting tool and all EU schools are invited to vote for or against the proposal. The most popular proposals will be highlighted and rewarded.
Contributions can start now, votes will take place between the 21st of March and the end of April.

Where is Europe?
This activity aims at helping young Europeans to find evidence of the EU in their region. The pupils involved in this activity learn that the EU is in fact present in our regional environment, and we all benefit from it. Members of the Committee of the Regions are especially invited to support the schools involved in this activity.
http://www.springday2006.org/ww/en/pub/spring2006/learn_and_debate.cfm
Local Heroes
The aim of the activity is to give recognition to local heroes, examples of European citizenship. Pupils choose one or more from the list of European values (human dignity and human rights, rule of law, peace, democracy, solidarity, freedom, tolerance, equality) and try to identify a person in their school, family, city or region that plays or played an important role in contributing to these value(s) for the people in their local environment.

Decide for Europe:
Choose a theme, get your pupils to learn about the EU institutions and draft a law for Europe. Let them play the roles of Commissioners, Members of the European Parliament and Ministers. Finally get your pupils to agree and propose a law that will have a positive impact on all European citizens.
This activity is interactive, educational and above all makes the voice of your pupils heard.

Together in the World:
General European coordinator: Sylvia Binger sylvia.binger@eun.org
Dialogue with the wider world:
This activity aims to raise awareness on what the EU does to create a dialogue with the wider world.
Pupils find out about the involvement of the EU in global actions and help development countries. They first identify organizations in their country and collect as much information as possible on how they operate.
Then they reflect on how they could get involved and how they could contribute.

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Solidarity
This activity aims to improve young Europeans’ awareness of the Millennium Development Goals and get them to support to the efforts in reaching these objectives. Together teachers and pupils choose one goal and deepen their knowledge on the topic by exploring resources provided on the MDGs. Pupils are asked to use artistic expression to show the best way to reach the chosen goal. They are also asked to provide a short textual explanation of the contribution and the message it conveys. The best contribution is submitted to the Spring Day web site.
http://www.springday2006.org/ww/en/pub/spring2006/togetherworld.cfm
Peace Poem:
Today the word "peace" has a different meaning to young people than it had for their parents or grandparents in the past. They usually approach it as something that is just an abstract term and not present in their daily lives. This activity forces them to reflect on the meaning of peace and serves as a reminder that peace is not something to be taken for granted. This is especially important in times of conflicts that endanger lives of citizens everywhere.

Green Week, Biodiversity
This year’s Green Week will focus on biodiversity. The annual environmental conference and exhibition will take place in Brussels between 30 May and 2 June 2006. Part of the event is the annual Green Week School Competition, which encourages young people from all EU Member States, candidate and EFTA countries to learn about environmental issues and express themselves artistically. Younger children can enter the competition with drawings and paintings illustrating their opinions about biodiversity while older pupils are invited to submit short digital videos on the same theme. The top three winners of each category will be invited to Brussels for the awards ceremony during Green Week. A selection of the best entries in each category will be presented at the conference. Deadline for entries is 25 March.

Development Youth Prize 2006, Focus on Africa
This is a new competition; it will be renewed every year for 4 years, with a different focus every year. Pupils aged 16 to 18 are invited to express their views via a collaborative class art work and message on how the EU can make a difference towards developing countries. Classes will be able to compete either with digital contributions (like multimedia montages) or non digital contributions (like photographs and posters). The winners will be invited to the Development Week in Brussels; they will also get cash prizes to be partly spent on a development project with an African class.
There is an obvious link between the schools working on Spring Day in Europe, Together in the World, and this competition. It is easy to get involved in both projects and benefit from all opportunities.
The web site will be available mid-February, it will be in 20 languages and registration will be open until the end of this school year.

Food4U Competition
How much do we eat? When do we eat? But, above all, what do we eat?
Each country has different eating habits, customs and traditions, but what is important is for everyone to be aware of the value of a healthy and well-balanced diet.

Play DeCiDe - Deliberative Citizens Debates
In this game website teachers can find kits ready to print, background information and visual instructions to run six debates about controversial life science issues: pre-implantation genetic testing; stem cell research;
xeno-transplantation; HIV/AIDS and legal responsibility; brain research and nanotechnology.
Teachers can use it in Science Clubs, Parents Evenings... or to do an enthusiastic introduction to a curriculum theme – the students can see how formal learning will be important in their citizenship. The kits are keen to use in Biology, Chemistry and Philosophy classes. It approaches topics like: cost-benefit equation, risk concept, precautionary principle, ethics, etc., besides many specific scientific concepts.
At the end of each debate, the policy proposals should be uploaded to the DeCiDe website to compare results across Europe. The results willl be presented to the European Commission in April 2006, in order to make members of the public feel that their views are valued by policy-making bodies.
Languages for now: English, Estonian, Italian, Portuguese and Slovene.
