eMAPPS.com summer school demonstrates use of games
Author: EUN News
On 21-25 April 2006 a summer school for teachers took place in Nida, Lithuania, the workshop was organised within the eMAPPS.com project. It was the occasion to experiment for the first time the possibilities of using games in the learning process in schools. Among the games the teachers played included the “Amber Room game”, which has been developed in the eMAPPS.com project. The objectives were that the teachers start to know the technology to be used and the possibilities to set up learning games with it.
Among the questions teachers had featured the practical aspects of using games such as: what they will use the game for? What skills they will need? What will they have to teach the children beforehand? How the game will fit into the school curriculum as teachers foresee as a possible constraint upon carrying out this activity.
Also, there were some concerns about time to play the game as some simply could not see how they could play the game within the school day with its – typically forty minute – fixed lesson periods. A possible solution mentioned at the summer school was that the game would have to be played out of school hours or during the weekend. For some this might be problematic.
Participants however, assuming these barriers can be overcome, mentioned that the game will be a popular and innovative teaching tool. Overall, they found the experience useful and exciting.
