Watch the winning Data Protection Day videos
Author: EUN News

With 16 European participating countries, 77 videos submitted in two months and more than 25,000 daily visits on the website (www.dataprotectionday.eu), the Data Protection Competition has closed successfully on 28 January 2009 which marks Data Protection Day.

It has demonstrated that young people undoubtedly show concern regarding privacy issues when using the internet. On 28 January 2009, the European Parliament in Brussels hosted the Data Protection Day ceremony, where four teams of young European from 15 to 19 years old were awarded for their video contribution to the Data Protection competition.

European Commission Vice President Jacques Barrot, responsible for Justice, Freedom and Security, delivered the keynote speech. The event was jointly opened by Sophie in't Veld, Member of the European Parliament, and Marc Durando, Executive Director of European Schoolnet, the ceremony was the occasion to discuss in depth the topic of young people and data protection.

Celebrated for the first time on 2007, the Data Protection Day offers the opportunity for European citizens to become more aware of the issue of personal data protection and of what their rights and responsibilities are in that regard. During this one-day event, the audience was invited to attend a series of conferences focused on young people and privacy. Surprisingly enough, even if most European Internet users feel uneasy when transmitting their personal data over the internet, only a minority uses tools and technologies that increase data security on the Net.

Accompanied by their teachers, representatives from the winning teams enjoyed a two-day stay in Brussels where they had the opportunity to visit the Microsoft Executive Briefing Center for European Innovation. They were showcased innovative technology solutions that enable governments and the education community to create more effective information technology infrastructures and services to the benefit of businesses, educators, and citizens.

Organised for the first time by European Schoolnet, with the support of Microsoft, the competition, that took place from 17 November 2008 to 20 January 2009.  Stay connected as during the next months, the website should be regularly updated with new videos and information about this high topic. Such encouraging results should not remained
