Second Spring Day meeting in Brussels
Author: EUN News
On 6-7 June 2008, the second Spring Day for Europe meeting took place in Brussels. National Liaisons and Teacher Advisers from 22 European countries participated with the aim of discussing how to improve this project on European issues. The meeting started with an overview of the current Spring Day activities given by the European Schoolnet team and followed by a brief report on activities organised at national level. Each country presented different ways of promoting the initiative, as well as main obstacles and opportunities given the national school system. Country reports included contests, school visits and festivals, showing a lively scenario and a great variety of celebrating Europe in the Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
During the second day, participants were split in small groups and invited to analyze the main Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) related to the project. Summarising their conclusions to the plenary, they generally highlighted the relevance of some key elements, such as timeframe, synergies with local events and increased interaction among the Spring Day team.
The meeting represented a successful opportunity to share good practices, learning from past experiences and reflecting about the future of the campaign. Willing to meet soon again, participants were also invited to debate online, using the freshly created Spring Day online community.
This year again Spring Day was a rich experience and a real success, with more than 4,300 registered schools, 5,000 contributions, and 300 guests, among whom French minister of education Xavier Darcos, Greek minister of education, Euripidis Stilianidis, Portuguese President Cavaco Silva, Commissioner Figel‘, Slovenian president, Dr Danilo Türk, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, MEP Katerina Batzeli, European Commission Vice-President Margot Wallström, and European Economic and Social Committee President, Dimitris Dimitriadis. These online chats and visits in schools were an opportunity to discuss European thenes and issues, and to make the voices of young Europeans heard by decision makers.
