Safer Internet Day 2008 celebrated worldwide
Author: EUN News

On 12th February, the Insafe network led worldwide celebrations of the 5th edition of Safer Internet Day on the theme “Life online is what YOU make of IT”. More than 50 countries joined forces to promote online safety for all users, especially youngsters, and to educate parents and careers about potential risks.

A 30-second pre-announcement spot inspired by this year’s theme reminded the European public about the forthcoming annual online safety rendez-vous.

More than 650 projects created by young people were submitted to the Safer Internet Day 2008 competition illustrating young people’s view on life online.  A total of 6 European winners have been selected, 1 first-place and 1 runner-up for each of three age categories: 5-10 years, 11-14 years and 15-19 years. The winners and runner-ups will receive prizes of 2,000 and 1,000 euro respectively to be used on ICT equipment and/or hands-on training. You can view all projects on the 2008 project gallery at: www.saferinternet.org

Another highlight of the day was the annual blogathon, an opportunity for people around the globe to engage in the topic of internet safety. The blog marathon evolved in a geographical east to west progression, throughout the day, depicted on an animated map. The blog closed at midnight (CET) of 12 February 2008, remaining open only for comments until 20 February. You can read the blog at: blog.eun.org/SID2008

Moreover, at this occasion, the launch of a Family e-safety kit developed by Insafe in partnership with Liberty Global/UPC took place. The e-safety kit has already been translated into eight major European languages, including French, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian and Romanian. This e-safety resource targets families with children between 6 and 12 aims and aims at stimulating discussion and knowledge of e-safety through educational activities, golden rules and useful links .
