Safer Internet Day competition: e-voting begins on 1 February 2008
Author: EUN News

On 12 February 2008, the Insafe network will lead celebrations across the world to mark the 5th annual Safer Internet Day. This year’s theme is “Life online is what YOU make of IT”. The competition scored the remarkable 655 entries which have been uploaded for selection. Now it is up to the public to use Insafe’s online voting platform to select the winner.

E-voting begins on 1st February and runs until 7th February. You are invited to visit the project gallery at www.saferinternet.org and register your vote for your favourite project in each of the three categories age categories: 5-10 years, 11-14 years and 15-19 years. The e-voting platform has been generously implemented by mobile operator Telefonica O2.  The projects vary from musical posters to full blown video clips and offer a wealth of awareness raising material for teachers and parents wishing to guide their protégés safely through the world of online technology.

First place winners and runners up in the Safer Internet Day competition will receive cash prizes – to be spent on computer equipment and/or online training – through the sponsorship of cable operator UPC/Liberty Global. In addition, two teams will be selected from amongst national winners and runners up in the 15-19 years age category will be invited on a 2-day trip to Slovenia in May to take part in the Youth Protection Roundtable (www.YPRT.eu) to present their award winning contribution to the members of the project. The YPRT, like Insafe, is a project co-funded by the European Commission within the Safer Internet Programme.

Vivian Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, will announce the winning teams in her blog posting when she launches Insafe’s annual worldwide blogathon just a few minutes after midnight on February 12th.
